Applying as a driver: find jobs, prepare your documents
Updated: · Bewerbino
For driver jobs, the first check is whether your licences are right: category C, CE or D, the CZV (driver qualification), the ADR certificate. If that is missing from the application, it ends up on the pile. Bewerbino reads the job ads of transport and logistics companies, delivery services and passenger transport companies in your region, matches them against your categories and shows you the jobs that fit. The draft cover letter states your licences and your driving experience precisely. You check it, add to it and approve it. You use the time you do not spend on job ads for further training such as CZV courses or for preparing for the interview.
Driving licence, CZV, driver card: what employers check first
For a driver job, the first minute decides your application: the dispatch team checks whether you are allowed to drive the vehicle at all. So list your categories and additional licences in full and in the wording of the regulation. “Lorry experience” is not enough; “category CE, certificate of professional competence for goods transport valid until 2029” is.
The categories are set out in the Swiss Road Traffic Licensing Ordinance (VZV). The most important ones for professional drivers:
- Category B: cars and vans up to 3500 kg gross weight and at most eight seats besides the driver’s seat. The basis for many jobs in courier and delivery services.
- Subcategory C1 and category C: motor vehicles over 3500 kg, meaning medium and heavy lorries, with a light trailer up to 750 kg.
- Category CE: lorries with a heavy trailer or articulated lorries. Often a requirement in long-distance transport and at freight forwarders.
- Subcategory D1 and category D: vehicles for passenger transport with more than eight seats besides the driver’s seat, from minibuses to coaches and service buses.
- Certificate of professional competence under the Driver Licensing Ordinance, the CZV (driver qualification): required for commercial transport with C/C1 or D/D1, separately for goods and passenger transport.
- ADR certificate: for transporting dangerous goods, for example tankers carrying fuel.
The CZV certificate and mandatory further training
If you transport goods with a category C or C1 lorry or carry passengers with a category D or D1 bus, you need the certificate of professional competence in addition to your driving licence. It is valid for five years. It is only renewed if you have attended five days of further training within those five years, meaning 35 hours in recognised CZV courses. Once the certificate has expired, you may no longer drive commercial transports. The ordinance has a few exceptions, for example if you transport material for your own work and driving makes up at most half of your working time, which is typical for tradespeople.
For your application, this means: write the expiry date of your certificate in your CV and attach the proof. If it expires soon, say openly how many course days you still need and when you will attend them. Employers plan with you, and a gap in your certificate means to them: you are not on the schedule. If you have completed the apprenticeship as a road transport specialist EFZ (Strassentransportfachmann or Strassentransportfachfrau EFZ, Swiss federal VET diploma), you do not need a separate CZV exam, because the content is tested in the qualification procedure. The further training obligation still applies.
Driver card and ADR: the additional licences in your file
The driver card is your personal card for the digital tachograph. It belongs to you, not to the employer, and cannot be transferred. You need it for journeys covered by the Working and Rest Time Ordinance ARV 1, for example in commercial goods and passenger transport with heavy vehicles. The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) is responsible for the card. You need a driving licence in credit card format to get one. The card is valid for five years. If you already have one, mention it in your CV: it shows that you can drive from day one.
For dangerous goods, you need special training. After passing the ADR exam, you receive the ADR certificate in credit card format. Many job ads in tanker and chemical transport require it; for others, it is a plus that sets you apart from other applicants. Add which classes the certificate covers and whether it also includes tanker transport.
Where driver jobs are advertised and what belongs in your file
Drivers are wanted by transport and logistics companies, large retailers and drinks wholesalers, construction companies and gravel works, waste disposal companies, courier and parcel services, and in passenger transport by bus companies and travel operators. The job ads are spread across the big job portals, the Job-Room of arbeit.swiss, cantonal job boards and company career pages. Temp agencies are common in this sector: many permanent jobs start with a temporary assignment. Search with several terms, for example “Chauffeur C”, “Lastwagenchauffeur”, “Fahrer Kat. CE” and “Buschauffeur”, because every company names its job differently.
Your file should include:
- Cover letter, short and concrete, tailored to the job.
- CV with all categories, the certificate of professional competence with expiry date, driver card and ADR.
- Copy of your driving licence (front and back) and of the certificate of professional competence.
- Proof of CZV course days, if the certificate needs to be renewed soon.
- Arbeitszeugnis (Swiss reference letter) from your last jobs, with vehicle types and areas of operation.
- Other licences, if they suit the job: forklift licence, crane licence or loader crane course.
The cover letter as a driver: short, clear, verifiable
Nobody expects a long essay from a driver. A short letter that hits the important points looks more professional than a page full of empty phrases. These points count:
- Categories and additional licences in the first sentence, exactly as they appear in the job ad.
- Your driving experience: vehicle types, local or long-distance, domestic or cross-border, bodies such as tipper, refrigerated box, swap body or loader crane.
- Your readiness for early shifts, night driving, weekends and multi-day tours. That often decides whether you are invited.
- One point that makes you reliable: accident-free years, customer contact on deliveries or experience with customs documents.
Dear Mr Muster
For six years I have been driving lorries with trailers in regional distribution, with category CE, a valid certificate of professional competence for goods transport and an ADR certificate. Your job in tanker transport appeals to me, because I finally want to use my dangerous goods training every day. Early shifts from four o’clock are no problem for me, quite the opposite.
Interview and test drive
For driver jobs, a short interview is almost always followed by a test drive with the company’s driving instructor, the dispatcher or an experienced driver. They check not only whether you move the vehicle safely, but also the pre-departure check, securing the load and handling the tachograph. Bring your driving licence, the certificate of professional competence and the driver card.
Practical questions often come up in the interview: How do you proceed if you notice you cannot keep to your driving time? What do you do if the customer is not there when you deliver? How do you secure a load that might shift? Answer with examples from your working life, and ask questions yourself: which vehicle, which routes, what the induction looks like.
