Applying in logistics and warehousing: find jobs, prepare your documents

Updated: · Bewerbino

In logistics, reliability, licences and experience count. Warehouses, freight forwarders and distribution centres often hire at short notice, and whoever reacts quickly gets in first. Bewerbino reads the job ads in your region every working day, matches them against your licences and your readiness for shift work, and shows you the jobs that fit, each with a draft cover letter. The draft states clearly what you bring: forklift licence, order picking, goods receipt. You check it, approve it and prepare for the interview, where you show how you get things done.

Qualifications in logistics: from certificate to warehouse manager

In logistics, there are many jobs that do not require an apprenticeship, for example in order picking or parcel handling. For roles with more responsibility, however, such as goods receipt, stock control or team leader, employers look closely at your qualification. So state it together with your specialisation, because a warehouse and parcel delivery call for completely different processes.

  • Logistics assistant EBA (Logistikerin or Logistiker EBA, federal VET certificate): two-year basic training, receiving, checking and storing goods and preparing orders. After that, a shortened apprenticeship to the EFZ is usually possible.
  • Logistics specialist EFZ (Logistikerin or Logistiker EFZ, Swiss federal VET diploma): a three-year apprenticeship specialising in warehouse or distribution. It covers goods receipt, warehouse management, shipping documents and route planning.
  • Professional examinations with a federal diploma of higher education, for example logistics specialist (Logistikfachfrau or Logistikfachmann), transport and logistics dispatcher, or specialist in international freight forwarding and logistics.
  • Advanced federal professional examinations with a federal diploma, such as supply chain manager or operations manager in transport and logistics.

Where warehouse and logistics jobs are advertised

Logistics jobs are found at retail chains and wholesalers, in distribution centres and parcel sorting centres, in spare parts and building materials warehouses, at freight forwarders, at the Swiss Post and at freight stations. Many industrial companies have their own warehouse and also hire people for it.

You find the job ads on the big job portals, in the Job-Room of arbeit.swiss, on regional job boards and on company career pages. Temp agencies play a big role in logistics, especially for peak times before Christmas or when a warehouse takes on new customers. A temporary assignment is often a good way into a permanent job, because the company gets to know you at work. Search with several terms: “Lagermitarbeiter”, “Logistiker”, “Kommissionierer”, “Staplerfahrer”, “Mitarbeiterin Wareneingang” and “Lagerist”.

What belongs in your application file in logistics

In logistics, employers want to see at a glance what you are allowed to operate and when you can work. So attach the proof straight away instead of only mentioning it.

  • Cover letter, short and concrete: licences, experience, readiness for shift work.
  • CV with your tasks in each job: goods receipt, order picking, packing, stocktaking, loading.
  • Certificate of proficiency or federal VET certificate with your specialisation.
  • The forklift training confirmation with the categories you are allowed to drive.
  • Other proof, for example for mobile elevating work platforms, cranes or your driving licence, if the job involves driving.
  • Arbeitszeugnis (Swiss reference letter) and assignment confirmations, including from temporary jobs.

The cover letter in logistics: four points that count

A cover letter for a warehouse job does not have to be long. What matters is that the key facts are visible straight away. These four points belong in it:

  • Qualification or experience in the first sentence, for example “logistics specialist EFZ, warehouse specialisation, with experience in goods receipt”.
  • Your licences and equipment by name: forklift category, handheld scanner, warehouse management system.
  • Your readiness for early, late or night shifts and for Saturdays, as precisely as possible.
  • An example of care or speed: a stocktake without discrepancies, an error rate that went down in the team, or training new colleagues.
Example of an opening (fictional)

Dear Mr Muster

For five years I have been working as a logistics specialist EFZ in goods receipt at a distribution centre, with a training confirmation for the counterbalance forklift. Your early shift job suits me, because I am used to starting at five o’clock and I like receiving goods best when the first lorries arrive.

Forklift licence, shift work and certificates: what you should know

Strictly speaking, there is no single “forklift licence” in Switzerland. Suva (the Swiss accident insurance fund) divides forklifts into two categories under the EKAS guideline 6518. For category R forklifts, such as the counterbalance forklift, you need training with qualified instructors, including an exam. The confirmation you receive afterwards is valid throughout Switzerland. You can find a list of training centres whose courses Suva checks on its website. For category S equipment, instruction by a designated specialist is enough, and it is recorded in writing.

For your application, this means: state exactly which categories and types of equipment you are allowed to drive, and attach the confirmation. Even with valid training, you will still be instructed at your new workplace; that is the employer’s job. If you do not have the training yet, ask in the interview whether the company will cover it.

Shift work is part of the job in many warehouses. Depending on the company, you work early in the morning, at night or at the weekend. Before applying, think about what you can really manage, also with your commute in mind. If you start at five o’clock, you need a connection that is already running then. Say honestly in your letter which shifts work for you. That builds trust and saves both sides a disappointment.

Interview and trial day

In logistics, the interview is often short and practical, sometimes right in the warehouse. Many companies invite you to a trial day or a trial assignment where you pick orders, scan or store goods. Bring safety shoes if you have them, and ask about clothing beforehand. On the trial day, what counts is how carefully and safely you work, not just how fast.

Common interview questions: What do you do if a delivery does not match the delivery note? How do you deal with time pressure when many orders have to go out at once? How do you keep things safe when driving a forklift with pedestrians in the hall? Think of an example from your daily work for each question. And ask about the shift schedule, the induction and the equipment you will operate yourself.
